We Conserve forests, trees, associated biodiversity and indigenous and exotic forestry knowledge in the Usambaras and Tanzania at a larger. FoU alleviate poverty through sustainable Tourism Development, community forestry projects as well as agroforestry in the usambaras, FoU projects involve planting trees that provide food and income as well as improved soil and water quality for communities while tourism help to generates incomes for the community projects to be undertaken, our sustainable approach to community forestry simultaneously addresses poverty and environmental issues such as habitat restoration.
There are often also fundamental rights issues involved in our projects such as access to ancestral land.In the Mountains FoU is focus on tree planting where there is an environmental need, and working with young people 4HMT clubs in the Primary and Secondary Schools who can benefit from working with trees, often in partnership with schools and so far over 20 millions trees has been planted in the Usambaras since 2008 and our goal is to plant 100 million trees by 2025.
However to reach that level, it will be necessary for FoU Tree planting partners to greatly expand the efforts of joining this vehicle of Tree Planting. FOU has set up an annual tagget of planting 15 million trees and is extremely confident that it can plant 15 million trees/year in the Usambara Mountains. However this is not enough, and it will be necessary for FOU to expand its efforts to other Eastern Arc Mountain ranges in Tanzania to help the organization reach the billion tree level.
Usambara Mountains are situated in the North Eastern part of Tanzania between Mount Kilimanjaro and the Indian Ocean. The mountains rise up steeply from the surrounding plains and can only be entered via a few roads.Read More
